Distinguished and Famous people from Mount Remarkable Region
🧭 John Ainsworth Horrocks
John Ainsworth Horrocks travelled through the Mount Remarkable district in August 1846 while seeking pastoral country farther north. His diary records a stop near the foot of Mount Remarkable, and the journey is commemorated at Horrocks Pass near Wilmington. The party included artist Samuel Thomas Gill and a camel, an unusual addition to an Australian expedition at the time. The journey later ended after Horrocks suffered a fatal gunshot accident near Lake Dutton and was taken back to Penwortham. The expedition’s diaries and Gill’s pictures preserve an unusually detailed record of the party’s passage through the district.
🖌️ Samuel Thomas Gill
Samuel Thomas Gill joined the 1846 Horrocks expedition as an artist, recording camps and landscapes in the Mount Remarkable district. His sketches and diary help show the journey at a more human scale than a line on a map: tents, animals, equipment and people occupied the foreground of those broad views. Back in Adelaide he developed expedition sketches into finished watercolours. Gill later became widely known for scenes of colonial life and the Victorian goldfields. Those expedition works preserve views of the southern Flinders Ranges from an important period in the region’s colonial history.
